Cooking competitions like Iron Chef Jr. are becoming a very popular event in schools and communities. Burlington, VT has been hosting a state-wide Iron Chef Jr. competition since 2008. From the start, the project was a collaborative effort between two leaders in the Farm to School movement: the Burlington School Food Project and Vermont FEED (Food Education Every day). Over the past six years, approximately 2,000 Vermont students have crafted original recipes that highlight local and seasonal ingredients and inspire school meal programs. This year, I made the trip and got to see the action. IT WAS AMAZING! The center "corral" had THIRTY-TWO teams all cooking at the same time and you could walk around and watch them craft their recipes - all within an hour! Now here is the best part: Iron Chef Jr. IS COMING TO CHICOPEE!
This fall, we will be hosting an Iron Chef Competition at Chicopee Comprehensive and the competing teams will be made up of culinary arts students from nearby high schools. It will be a community event and there will be raffle prizes, tasty foods, and will be a ton of fun. Stay tuned for more information!
